Legal Question in Personal Injury in Pennsylvania

what is the minimum pip insurance amount in Pa.

Could you tell me what is the minimum personal injury protection a person can obtain? Also is there a legal minimum in Pa. that a person has to carry?

My wife was injured in an auto accident and I was told we can only receive compensation for what the other driver was insured for.

Look at your policy. It will show the amount of coverage you purchased for medical bills. You are not limited by the insurance coverage of the other driver. You could receive a judgement much greater then the limits of the defendants insurance policy. As a practical matter, that excess amount may or may not be collectable. There may be other policies of insurance in the household that will provide additional coverage or the defendant may have substantial assets from which to recover an excess judgement.

The minimum PIP coverage for medical bills is $5,000. That is the amount your own ins co will pay for your own medical bills under "no-fault" provisions. The minimum liability coverage is $15,000. That is the amount you can collect from another driver whose negligence causes an injury. That amount is for any excess medical bills, lost wages, and "pain & suffering."
