digital copy/ebooks
im planning to set up a website which provides free downloads of e-books. am i going to violate a law when i distribute (free or not) the digital copies of existing printed copies/books? thanks

It would be an infringement of intellectual property rights of the authors if you did not ask their permission or made prior arrangement with the author of the materials you intend to post in your website.
If the printed works you intend to publish as e-books was created more than 50 years ago, you can post them even without permission from the author provided that a copyright was not renewed or a new copyright was registered.
