Pay fine for posession of marijuana?

Should we just pay the fine or does he need an attorney? What is the best way to handle this with us being so far away from the County he would need to appear in? My 20 year-old son and friends were charged with possession of marijuana traveling back from FL. It was not his marijuana, not his car. We live in NC and he is in college and never been in any trouble before.
