Is it legal to ask for a social security number when registering to vote?

Election workers not only are allowed to ask for this information, they essentially have to. It is the only information they can use to distinguish between voters with identical names or to prevent people who have multiple addresses and/or who have moved recently from voting in multiple places. It is also the most reliable information they can use when culling the names of dead voters from the rolls.
