Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Tennessee

Retail Establishment Policy on Accepting Checks

Retail business-We have made a Policy for accepting checks. The policy is: A Valid Driver's License and a Major credit card(Visa,MC, American X-Press, or Discover).

Are we in violation of a civil rights law by not accepting a check from a person with no major credit card?

Thank you for your response in this matter.

Re: Retail Establishment Policy on Accepting Checks

It is my belief that you are not violating a civil rights

law.

There's no law protecting the class of people who don't have

credit cards. I suppose you're thinking that black people are less

likely to have credit cards and thus you are acting

like a racist, is that it?

Not to worry so much; you have a genuine business purpose for your policy,

I think, and I assume you're not just using that as a technique to target

and harass and discourage one minority from shopping at your store.

(I COULD be wrong, but I don't think so.)
