Re: Name Change

Though most people don't realize it, there is no requirement that anyone go to court to change their name.... but getting schools and other government bureaucrats to recognise that and change records is often difficult. While more than likely if both parents agree on a name change a judge will change it with no hesitation, Tennessee law is not at all clear on what a court is supposed to do in such a case. I deal with this in one of the links on me website, specifically at jesbeard.com/9a.htm

Once the child is 18, the situation is much more clear and the chald can change their last name without regard to what either parent might want, see my link at jesbeard.com/9.htm

Re: Name Change

If you are the child's father, or the father is dead or had parental rights terminated, it is no problem. Otherwise, you might have a rough case on your hands. Contact an attorney in your town. For more info, see www.gsmithlawfirm.com
