The easiest way to go would be to file what's called a "provisional patent application" which keeps your place in line in the event someone else should subsequently come up with the same idea. Its cheaper than filing for a full patent, but its still going to cost you some money - probably around $3000 to $6000. Hope this helps a little.

AND, in the meantime, do not share your idea with anyone unless and until you have had them sign an agreement that the intellectual property is yours and that they will not disclose your idea to anyone. This is very crucial. Cannot emphasize it enough. BE CAREFUL!
