Legal Question in Criminal Law in Texas

My brother was caught transporting fron san antonio to dallas with about 1 kilo of cocaine on a greyhound bus. First time ofender, When got arrested he was given a 25.000 bail , five days later it went up to 100.000. He has been appointed a public defender. My question is: I really dont see this public defender doing anything for my brother, do you suggest i hire a private attorney. And what is the usual jail time for this type of offense? In other words should I try and have him taken out or is this a lost case and no matter what he will do the time?

Pat Montgomery Board Certified in Criminal Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization

The Western District of Texas has an excellent Federal Public Defender's Office. They are faced with a very large caseload, but they are competent and well versed on the law. They have a familiarity with the local courts that is matched by few attorneys. Few hired attorneys have the resources and experience of the public defender. Fewer still have their knowledge and abilities. Even rarer are lawyers better than the FPD.

There are some expensive private Board Certified attorneys who are up to the task. There are also lots of local attorneys in our crowded legal market who will tell you exactly what you want to hear to land the business. Your questions about jail time and whether or not it is a lost case are invitations to =such attorneys to sell their services. Those questions should not be answered without an investigation of additional information beyond what you supplied in your questions.
