The State has three years from the date of the offense to get the case indicted and filed in district court. However, any periods of time between the offense date and the date of filing during which the defendant is out of state don't count, and once a court case had been filed, the statute of limitations is "tolled", or stops running (so there would be no statute of limitations issue if the case was filed 2 1/2 years after the offense, but then didn't get resolved until there was a plea or trial a year or more later).
