what is joint custody and primary custody

do tx courts usually award joint custody for a divorce. What is primary custody in joint custody and who gets that. Is it granted to one parent so even though there is joint custody the parent with primary custody has the right to enroll the kid in school which would mean that that parent would have the kid more that 6 months each year.

There are MANY variations on the theme, but generally speaking, joint custody is the most common arrangement, where both parents have equal or similar rights to access to information about the child, and contribution to major decisions about the child's well-being. One parent, the primary, will have the right to determine the residence of the child within the jurisdiction of the court or a contiguous county. That parent normally receives child support and pays half of the uninsured medical expenses. The possessory normally has standard visitation, pays child support, provides medical insurance, and pays half of uninsured medical.
