Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

Joint Legal Conservator (sp)...

I have an 11 yr old son whose father has never been involved in his life and I have no idea where the father is. My son is very close with his grandparents (my parents) and I would like to make them Joint Legal Conservator of my son, in case something happens to me, they would have legal custody. How can I go about this, even though the father is not around? I know I would need a lawyer, so what is the procedure? Thank you.

If there are no pending orders concerning the child, you could file a Suit Affecting the Parent Child Relationship for the determination of custody. You must attempt service on the father. You might have to do it by publication. Sometimes costs $600-$800 (in Houston for instance). Shop around for a lawyer. They don't all charge the same. Good Luck.
