I am currently separated from my husband and have just found out that I am ill. My medical bills will be large enough that I won't be able to pay them. Is he obligated to help pay these bills sense the divorce isn't final?

Yes. Since medical treatment is a "necessary," he is legally liable for the medical bills.
You'll want to make sure that you include these bills specifically in the decrree.
