Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Texas

defamation/harrassment over email - how can I file lawsuit?

My family has been receiving harrassing emails (that have lead to family strife) from an anonymous address. I have managed to reliably trace the email to a single address and I know who the person is. Legally, what action can my family take against that person. We are eager to press the maximum charges possible. thanks

You are going to have to fish around for a local lawyer that knows both libel law and the laws concerning internet jurisdiction. You should be able to sue the libeler in your state, but your lawyer will have to be sharp in order to convince the judge that he has jurisdiction.

Proving that the sender is who you believe it is will be another hard sell, so your attorney has to be knowledgeable in the technology, or at least be willing to learn.

I would contact your local police. Depending on nature of harassment, e-mail could come under anti stalking laws.
