Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Texas

My ex-fiance broke up the engagement last week. He has paid only $1000 to reserve the venue and the ring ($2000). I have paid $7000. how can I get my money? When he gave me the ring (didn't even propose), I asked him few times in different occasions (before setting a date and putting deposit down for venue) if he was sure about the wedding. I asked because he had shown lack of determination setting the date in the past. Every time I asked, he said that no one has made him; it was his decision. We agreed to spend 50/50 for the wedding. Since I was dealing with vendors, I ended up paying about $7000 for saving the date and some payments. I think he should compensate me for it. He should be glad that I am not suing him for emotional damages. how should I approach this issue and get my money back?

You can sue him for damages for violation of an oral agreement (contract). Oral contracts are enforceable (with a few exceptions), but the real problem is that the parties will have different ideas about the SPECIFIC terms of the contract.

A court won't give you emotional damages, but you can go ahead and ask for them in your petition.
