Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Texas

Slander and the Internet

I own a discussion board (membership: 5000) in a city with a larger rival board (membership: 10,000). The owner of the rival board has just found out my ''real'' job through the grapevine, and has posted this information as a warning to others not to frequent my establishment, along with many blatent lies that seem to be the typical M.O. for her. Many of her moderators have also joined in. She has also ''pinned'' the topic about me and my new company at the top of her board and so far, it has had 3,000 views. I fear in our community I am ruined before I have even begun. We are all a tightly knit group and members frequent both boards daily and I rely on advertising on both boards for business. She has completely banned my company from ever posting there and has even gone so far as to threaten members that might visit us and write good things about us.

What can I do?

Re: Slander and the Internet

You may have a number of actionable causes against her. However, the first thing to do would be to write to her, certified mail return receipt requested, asking her to cease and desist from publishing untruths about you on her board. Make sure that he have printed out the libelous allegations she has posted, so that you have a record of her misbehaviour. Then see a lawyer.

Handling the matter will not be inexpensive, so plan accordingly.
