I was working for a company then they sent me a letter saying they could no longer offer me employment along with the false info on my background that they found. Yes, you can sue these folks for defamation. They are lying about you, and it is causing you damage; that's the essence of a slander suit.

You should send them a demand letter first (paper letter - certified mail - put a date on it - keep a copy - demand that they stop lying about you).
