Renting a dance hall with no contract
Can I receive all the money I have given minus the deposit? I rented a dance hall for $750 for April 4, 2009. I had given a $100 deposit to reserve the date. There was no contract signed. In December I gave $500 and in February I went to see the hall and there was some remodeling going on. I was not satisfied with the outcome and wanted to cancel my reservations there. He said because of Texas law he can only return 50% which is $300 back because it was close to the event date. I wanted my $500 back because he did not notify me of the remodeling and there was no contract signed. What can I do?

Did you ask him what Texas law was he referring to?
