Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Texas

Informing friend(s) that are beneficiaries

I guess this is not a specific

legal question but here goes:

Am thinking about letting a friend(s) know that they are in

my will. They might be moving

far from me so I want be sure

they know in case something

happens to me.

Background on me: Never

married,no children. Other

beneficiaries are charities

on investments which will

pass outside my will.

Is it unusual for a person

to let a friend know they

are in his/her will? How common

is it? Is it considered

ethical or unethical?

Please advise. Thanks.

Re: Informing friend(s) that are beneficiaries

It is totally personal and up to you whether you tell. There are pluses and minuses on disclosing. The minuses would your using the gift to manipulate the heir into doing favors or making decisions based on the expectation, and another would be the heir being disappointed should you change your mind and decide to leave your estate to others. Like I said before, it is your decision.
