I am married and reside with man who was widowed, the property is deeded to him and his late wife. his only child is in nursing home and is mentally impaired, down syndrome, if my husband were to precede me in death, without a will, would i become automatic heir to propery?

No. But you would have a life estate in the house.
Tell your husband that he should make a will.
