Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

My father passed away a month ago and he does not have an estate account, he had two credit card accounts in his name only and there is still a balance. Are we as family liable for paying the balance?

Not the family, but his surviving spouse (if there be such) could possibly be liable if the expenditures on these accounts were for what the law terms the "necessaries of life", e.g., shelter, medical care, food, etc.
