Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

Taking off Negative Listing on Credit Report

My brother & I had a joint credit card account open years ago which I don't use anymore and he is the only one using it. He has not been paying the bills for the last couple months (along his many other cards) which brought the account to closed and delinquent status. This has also affected my credit scoring (under 620). I found out about this when I had just recently been denied for a loan. I made him pay off the account. The account has been paid off but this negative listing still shows up on my report (and it's the only negative listing). I am not able to get a good rate on my loan and want to know if there is anyway that I can have this listing off and my score be rescored as the way it should have been w/o that account listing. I understand that it would take up to 7 years to get that listing off but I can't afford having the negative impact that long. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Would a legal action resolve this? What impact would it have on my brother if that is the step I need to take to get it off my report? Thanks.

Re: Taking off Negative Listing on Credit Report

There is no "legal action" that you can take to get this demerit removed from your credit report---as long as it's accurate(which, apparently, it is.)

However, you are permitted to request of each of the major credit reporting agencies that your written explanation for the negative report be

inserted in your credit report.
