Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

I am 15 years and 9 months old and I want to be emancipated when I turn 16 because I am having major problems with my mom. My grandmother has custody of me because alot of stuff in the past but I am living with my mom and grandmother currently in Virginia. We had our court cases in Florida and the judge gave my grandmother custody, I would like to know what being a ward of the state is because I might be, but I'm not sure.

And I think I cannot be emancipated if I am a ward of the state, I'm not sure.

If you're a ward of the state, then the state's Department of Social Services or person(s) it has designated would likely have formal custody of you, but, in any case, emancipation for a teen of your tender years would likely be a very bad idea (irrespective of whatever problems you may be having with the one who brought you forth into this world).

At this point, you are probably not a ward of the court, but based on the little information you have provided, you would probably not qualify for emancipation under Virginia law. I would like to encourage you, however, to contact an adult you feel you can trust, whether it is a teacher, a guidance counselor, a clergyman, or some one else, and let them know about the problems you are having. There should be people there in your community who will be willing to help you address those problems so that you will graduate from high school successfully. I hope you will follow this advice. I am pulling for you to succeed!
