If i want to file for custodey of a child can the person still ive in the home with the child

The more fundamental as well as relevant question would be (in my opinion):

Why would you need to file formally for custody of the child if you're the

natural mother whom the law already recognizes as the natural custodian (and,

presumably, no one is currently challenging these natural custodial rights?)
