Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

Mother of pregnant teenager needs help

I am the mother of a pregnant teenager and would like to know what I can legally do to make the father pay support? And is there anything that I can do to help with support now before the child is born? The father is also a minor,What responsability does his parents have to support?

As I read your facts, the grandparents would not be held liable to pay child support for their grandchild. After paternity has been established, your daughter can seek child support against the father. The court will award support based on what he makes and what the court feels he may be able to make. Depending on age, the court might decide, not much. Good luck! In a paternity suit, you can ask for reasonable costs relating to the delivery and pre-delivery care.

Re: Mother of pregnant teenager needs help

This is what I was looking for earlier. From the Code of Virginia:

20-49.6. Proceedings to establish paternity or enforce support obligations of males between the ages of fourteen and eighteen.

In any proceeding to establish or enforce an obligation for support and maintenance of a child of unwed parents, a male between the ages of fourteen and eighteen who is represented by a guardian ad litem pursuant to 8.01-9 and who has not otherwise been emancipated shall not be deemed to be under a disability as provided in 8.01-2. The court may enter an order establishing the paternity of the child based upon an admission of paternity by such male made under oath before the court or upon such other evidence as may be sufficient in law to support a finding of paternity. The order may provide for support and maintenance of the child by the father and shall be enforceable as if the father were an adult.
