Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

relinquishment of parental rights

I may have fathered a child and the young lady and i have both decided to X me out of the picture. She is not going to mention my name on any of the paper work and the birth certificate. She is getting some paper work drawn by her attorney for me to relinquish my rights and responsibilities. If I am not identified on any of the paper work do i / should i still sign paper work of that nature. She wants some kind of legal guarantee that i will leave them alone and i want some kind of guarantee that i will be left alone. In your opinion what route do i need to take?I live in Virginia, so do i take this issue to a court to terminate my rights and responsibilities? What are my options in this scenerio?

Re: relinquishment of parental rights

No, neither you nor the young lady will be able to offer each other such supposedly mutually beneficial guarantees with respect to this child since, ultimately, only a judge of a court having proper jurisdiction over such a matter would be in a position to decide, legally speaking, i.e,. whether or not you're the father of the child, and, if so, whether your parental rights with respect to this child should be terminated, etc.
