Legal Question in Family Law in Virginia

I'm a VA resident, who is about to be divorced. My wife and I have a child. Am I correct in understanding that we will have to live seperately for six months before we file the papers?

You will have to live separate and apart (which under some circumstances can be under the same roof) for twelve months, not six, before you can file for divorce based on separation. When there is a minor child, the waiting period is a year.
