Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Virginia

Old Underage possession charge

When I was 20 yrs old (now 23) I was a little stupid and was walking from one house to another with a plastic cup of wine during a festival. I was not drunk but received an underage possession ticket, a few weeks later I moved out of town and just ignored it. Not the smartest thing to do. But i was young and stupid. So they said i was guilty because i didn't show for court, A few years later I thought I would look up what i had been avoiding. well they gave me a $2500.00 fine. AH!more than most people get for DUI's! so now my license is suspended for failure to pay fine. I want to set up payment plan but am 6 hours away from the court that i have to go to set that up. Do i have any options. I am about to start looking into a small loan to pay it at one time. but that seems very expensive. but i really need my license back.. please help

Re: Old Underage possession charge

Your option is to pay the court fine assessed against you either on an installment plan (if acceptable to the court)or all at once (if you can borrow the money).

It is unlikely that the DMV will restore your license until the entire amount of the court fine has been paid and you have proof of it to submit to this agency.

(If you had appeared in court as required by the summons, as a first time offender eligible for a deferred disposition of the matter, you might have gotten off with no fine at all.)

Such are the lessons that human beings are wont to learn too late.
