Legal Question in Legal Ethics in Virginia

My friend has been working at a place for a little over a year now.. After he quit about a week ago the owner is now trying to say she is filling charges against him because he was not autgorize to work there. In the the year span the owner knew he w as there and he was legally hired by the store manager. What kind of charge could she try to file?
