Legal Question in Traffic Law in Virginia

driving with international DL while living in VA

I was charged for driving with my international DL and not having a valid VA DL. I have lived in VA for over a year becasue I got married to U.S. resident. I am currently overstaying visa and am waiting to get a green card. Because I am without a status I cannot get a VA DL. What can I tell the judge in the court? How can I get out of this mess? I really need to drive, I am a fulltime student and I dont want any record either. Is there any way how I can get out of this ticket? What is the usual sentence they give in such cases? Can I represent myself without an attorney? Thank you very much.

Re: driving with international DL while living in VA

If you're in the process of obtaining a "green card", then you're attempting to regularize your status with the Department of Homeland Security and its USCIS agency and you should be eligible to apply for a driver's license in Virginia.

Nevertheless, this situation is sufficntly complicated from a legal perspective that I would highly recommend that you retain counsel to represent you who is knowledgeable regarding local traffic law matters as well as immigration law issues.
