Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Virginia

My father died in VA with no will.

My father died in Virginia with no Will. He had a life insurance policy and Annuity with his job with no beneficiary on either. I am listed as next of kin on the death certificate that I have but he is not listed on my birth certificate. He was also never married to my mother. How can I go about being executive of his estate to retrieve this.

Take a certified copy of the death certificate to the clerk's office of the probate court and tell them that you wish to be appointed as administrator of your father's intestate estate (no will). Then, once you have copies of these letters of administration, send a letter to the life insurance company and the one maintaining the annuity along with a copy of the court's letter and a certified copy of the death certificate directing each to send you the proceeds from your father's life insurance policy and his annuity.
