Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Washington

My father has accumulated a fair amount of medical debt in the past couple of years, and has no intention of paying any of it. I was wondering who is responsible for his debt in the event of his death?

His estate would be liable, and those debts would be paid from the estate before any distribution to heirs or legatees. However, heirs and legatees would not be responsible for any deficiency.
