Legal Question in Criminal Law in Washington

CPS being reported for abuse by your child

Son told school counselor that he's being hit at home and she reported us to CPS today (2/6/09). My husband travels for work and expects to leave the country (Canada) on Monday. Will a criminal investigation keep him from leaving the US? Or returning? He is scheduled to return w/in 3 days. Also, we need to locate an attny in our area that deals w/ CPS.

Re: CPS being reported for abuse by your child

It depends. CPS can be a swamp where you will wander around in for a great while if not handled properly. The first point is: DO NOT GIVE STATEMENTS TO CPS. You have a right to know what the allegations are and what the specifics of those alegations are set out as. Get an attorney and refer any questions to the attorney inless you are instructed otherwise. I have worked with CPS on a number of cases and I can tell you that it is all too easy to make a misstep and then have to explainyour way out of it. Happy to have helped.
