Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Washington

My significant other and I purchased a home in Washington State. We want to Homestead our residence. When I ordered the legal forms on line the form that was provided was for "a couple" but inside the document it states clearly that the "couple" must be married.

Should we each file for homestead protection or can only one of us file for homestead protection even though the residence is owned by both of us. Can we legally use the "couples" form?

Thank you in advance for your answer.

Dear Ms. Head:

I think we'll have to see how the election affects my answer, but if 71 passes, "couple" will include same-sex domestic partnerships and married heterosexual couples.
