Legal Question in Traffic Law in Washington

Driving on a suspended

I have a suspended license and I was pulled over by a cop who randomly ran my plates. After going back to her car for a few minutes she returned to my car and handed me my ID, she then told me it was my lucky day and she wasn't going to arrest me and have my car impounded. She told me to drive down the street to the gas station and call a friend and she would mail me a court date. She never gave me a ticket or asked me to sign anything, don't they have to do that? Can't she get in trouble for telling me to drive knowing I had a suspended?

Re: Driving on a suspended

The police can only get in trouble if they let a drunk driver on the street because that impaired person could end up hurting or killing someone and there would be liability on the police for that. However, letting a suspended driver go is not the same. You were told to drive to a gas station and call someone to come and pick you up. The police can simply send you a ticket to appear in court based upon your vehicle license information which is tied to your driver's license information. You had better make sure that the addresses on your vehicle registration and driver's license are correct or you coul dend up with a warrant out for your arrest if you don't show up for court. If you get a ticket, call me and we'll talk about your best defense.
