Legal Question in Traffic Law in Washington

School Bus and Stopping

I am always very careful when I see school buses. I slow and stopped when the yellow lights flash and never pass. I'm unsure about an incident that happened to me on my way to work yesterday.

I was on my way to the post office and stopped my car at an intersection (four-way stop). I stopped at the stop sign facing south, there was a car stopped at the sign to my left and a school bus stopped to my right. The road ahead of me was barricaded for construction. The school bus red lights began flashing, but I was turning left, so I proceded to turn left, away from the bus.

I was given a ticket for failure to stop for the bus. Is this worth contesting in court? Can school buses pick up children at an intersection?

Re: School Bus and Stopping

It depends upon the facts of the situation. Where were the children standing while waiting for the bus? Where were the children walking to get to the bus? This ticket is definitely worth fighting but will require more facts and investigation. These type of tickets are very bad on your driving record as insurance companies see them as an indication that you have no regard for the safety of children. With a success rate of 90% and 26 years of experience, I can tell you that you should not let this go and simply pay the ticket.
