Legal Question in Employment Law in Wisconsin

Forced to take 'Vacation'

I work for a social services organization in a shelter facility for youth. The census at our shelter has been low lately, and my boss has been cutting shifts. Generally, two staff work at all times, but instead of cutting the shift of a part-time employee, he will instead cut my shift and I am full-time. On the day I'm scheduled to work, he calls and tells me my shift has been cut and I need to take a vacation or personal day because of the shift cut. I now have no personal days and very little vacation time left, and having a Wednesday night off every week is hardly my idea of a 'vacation'. Now I'm afraid I will have no actual vacation time left if this continues much longer. Is there anything I can do? I haven't been able to find any information anywhere on this subject.

Re: Forced to take 'Vacation'

Hello,

Employment law is tough in Wisconsin. An employer can take away your hours or your job and there is nothing you can do about if legally. Is there a supervisor or owner that exists above your boss? If so, maybe you could go to that person and get his/her opinion. Why doesnt your boss permit you to take the day off without pay? It doesnt seem right that you have to use use vacation just because you are not needed a particular day at work. Sorry I cannot be of more help. Mark J. Mahoney
