Legal Question in Personal Injury in Wisconsin

Past due

I was a victim in a traffic accident. Because of the accident, I have become ravaged with debt. I have fallen extremely far behind on all of my bills, including my mortgage, credit cards, and Gas & Electric. In fact, I have just received a disconnect notice for my gas & electric. My present attorney is reluctant to get me any kind of advance on my settlement and says that there is nothing he can do about any of my bills...is this true? I have checked into filing bankruptcy, but since they want their money upfront, I can't afford to do that either. If he can't do anything about these bills, what can I do?

Re: Past due

Your attorney cannot advance money to you from a potential settlement, as it is unethical to do so. I do not know enough about your case to know the merits or the value, however, there may be ways to get some monies to you potentially from any insurance on the vehicle in which you were the driver or passenger. Otherwise, there are other pre-settlment funding companies who can advance money to you, and then be paid from the eventual proceeds from the settlement of your case, however, they should really be used as a last resort, due the interest provisions. Other loan companies should be considered before these pre-settlement loan companies.
