Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Wisconsin

My father passed away in aug 2008. He had 5 children, 4 daughters and one son. Us four daughters are living in Wisconsin, My brother and my dads wife and my Dad were all from Texas. When my Dad died, us girls back in WI were kept in the dark about everything. We know he had a 401 k, life insurance and a home mortagage. Now a year later we girls are getting letters from an attorney in Texas saying we are the heirs and therfore responsible for the defaulted mortgage of over 100,000. My Dads wife apparently took off to Mexico with whatever moneys were left. Are we legally responsible for this mortgage in Texas?

Your facts are insufficient to answer your questions completely, but there is no way you just get the debt. On the other hand, if you get the real estate, you may take it subject to the debt and have to decide whether it is worth trying to salvage. Good luck.
