Legal Question in Criminal Law in India

Hi,
Need urgent advise.
A friend of mine [a girl] is being blackmailed for some private photos of her which she shared long time back with her ex boyfriend. Her ex boyfriend is already married and he is rich enough for not demanding any money for this [as we believe]. Right now, a third person has these private pictures[don't know how he got]. But this third person is asking for 3Lacks [he directly messaged (claiming that no. doesn't belong to him. Also, he message on app Viber) ] otherwise he will share these private pictures on watsapp.
I have advised her to contact police. Meanwhile, i would like to know the right steps we should be taking besides contacting police and how this act is punishable under IPC.
