Legal Question in Employment Law in United Kingdom

Over a year ago i finished my employment contract which was a fixed contract with set dates. a month after i left the company i noticed that i received a payslip saying that i was due to be paid 'X' at the end of the month. I very quickly contacted the pay department and let them know that my contract was over and i was not due to be paid anything for the month or from there onwards. I asked them to cancel the payment before it took place and and e-mailed them to confirm my request. I was assured on the telephone that the payment would not be made and i did not think about it again. 8 months later they contacted me to say that they had paid me and i owed them nearly 2000. As i had gone travelling (hence the end of my contract) i had already spent this money as i thought it formed part of my savings. What are my rights in this situation?
