Child Custody wanted by Ex boyfriend

Hi, My ex boyfriend that i had dated for almost 3 years and i had a child. i have been away from him now for over a year. The situation I was in was violent and he showed no signs of being a good father. he has a felony record also. I did not want to continue seeing him or marry him so i left the state of california where we both lived and i moved to alabama where i now have lived for over a year. I did not tell him where i went because of his threats to me if i ever left him. He has contacted me last night and found me. he wants to see the child and have some rights to custody. I will not let him see her , she is 3 years old. since we were never married what legal rights does he have? please help.. tammie

Re: Child Custody wanted by Ex boyfriend

He may have some rights, but he would need to petition the court here to have himself declared the father of the child and for visitation rights. Of course he would also have to pay child support. You might be able to prevent him from having visitation, or a least limit it, based upon his past history. You probably should not let him take the child if you think he might take the child and go back to California. You need to meet with an attorney in your area as soon as possible.
