What happens to a person's estate when he dies without a will?

The State of Alabama has statutes in place to direct how a person's real and personal property will pass to the next of kin. In other words, the State already has a will, of sorts, for you. It might not do what you want it to do but it will pass your property to family members. If you do not have any family left, all your stuff reverts to the state.
