Legal Question in Business Law in California
I'm an independent contractor, graphic design and sales. I don't make much. My last invoice was for $236.65...However, when I received my check, the invoice was attached with circles and slashes through my numbers. The check was made for $215.75. There were no questions asked or any notice of explanation of why my invoice was changed and my check was for less than what I had invoiced. (The issue seems to be that they don't want to pay me for mileage to staff meetings, as I work from my home.)
My question then: Is it legal for them to just change my invoice without notifying me?

"Legal"? That's not an issue. If you disagree, then you can file a small claims action for the unpaid money, if you can justify your bill.
