Is it legal to list companies in an online directory without their permission?

This happens frequently, and I have never heard of a statute regulating it or a successful suit for damages or an injunction. If someone is listing you, I'd say you can't stop it unless some particular privacy right of yours is being invaded. If you are listing or planning to list others is a directory, you should be aware that someone might sue you, and although you'd probably win unless you published trade secrets or highly personal (private) information, you might incur defense costs.

Thoughts in addition to the foregoing: The use of any trademarks in the listings might give leverage for infringement attacks on you. Also, the use of any copyrighted materials of others might similarly allow infringement claims. The risk seems fairly low, however. Most businesses like more exposure, as long as it doesn't reflect poorly upon them.
