Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in California

I was stopped at sobriety checkpoint over the weekend and the officer asked for my driver's license and I learned it was expired and got my car impounded and received a ticket. My question is can the officer ask for my driver's license randomly like that, I obviously was not intoxicated or indicated no reasons to be?

An officer conducting a sobriety check point has the right to request your driver's license and proof of vehicle registration as part of his responsibility to investigate proper operation of a motor vehicle. Unfortunately, the courts have upheld the right of police to operate sobriety check points. Good luck.
