Legal Question in Construction Law in California

I build a kitchen and installed for a guy that on the past i had worked with 2 of his brothers doing another kitchen and entertainment center for the other. I offered to do the most recent for 8500 and he only payed a deposit of 3800. The kitchen is installed and finished but he will refuse to pay and continues to come up with stories why he wont pay. There was a contract at the begining that we both sign but since i dont have a contractors licence of any kind i want to know what i could legaly do to make him pay the balance?

Not only is there nothing you can do legally to make him pay, if you tried he would have the right to force you to repay the deposit! Business and Professions Code section 7031(a) makes it illegal for an unlicense contractor to collect for any work that requires a license; and 7031(b) gives the owner the right to get back any money paid to an unlicensed contractor.
