Legal Question in Construction Law in California

I cannot get contractor to finish his work. Keeps asking for more money to continue but all has been paid current. What should my next step be? is there a 17 hour notice form I can give him!

Is the contractor licensed and bonded? Do you have a written contract that goes beyond just being a signed quote? I'd demand a meeting to go over the payments, the progress and the percentage complete, with the contract laid out on the table. Get a written agreement, supplementing the contract, on when each step will be completed and when you are to pay any portion of the remaining unpaid contract price. If there are subcontractors or materials suppliers involved, ask for and get some evidence that they are paid. You need to turn yourself into a part-time contract administrator. When contractors get into money or schedule problems with one or more jobs, they have a natural tendency to look for extra or earlier money from the softest and most easygoing client, and to slack off on making progress where the client is least likely to become an angry nuisance to them. You don't want to be the contractor's patsy and pay for the losses on someone else's job.
