What can legally happen if you take a landscaping project in California without a contractors license if the job is valued at $9000.00

Contracting without the correct license is a crime and can be punished (but rarely is) with jail time and/or fine, plus loss of right to collect in court.

The main penalty is that the owner can refuse to pay you, and if they have paid you they have an absolute right to their money back.
