Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

My 30 year old son has been in ill health, living with me, and unable to work. If I claim him as a dependent on my taxes can I be held responsible for his future medical bills?

There really is no correlation between claiming him as a dependent on your taxes, and becoming liable for his medical bills. The reason a parent is generally liable for his child's medical bills is the fact that the child is generally a minor. Here, your son is an adult, and while you may be able to claim him as a dependent (check with a tax professional for the exact rules regarding that issue), it does not create liability on your part for debts he incurs. Just be sure that when he seeks medical treatment, he does not give your name as a co-responsible party.
