Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Collection for debt already paid

I Applied to an online university out west and dropped before the first class. I was billed and made a payment directly to the university's collections dept. I was then referred to a collections agency. I paid the agency off and an extra payment by mistake. The uncancellecd check was returned to me with a note stating that my account was paid in full. This was last year. Last week I recieved a notice from a different collections agency stating that I owe this university another sum of money. In the last year I have recieved no notice or corrospondance until the collections notice. Was my debt paid with the first collections or can this university continue to find charges for me to pay? I called the university and now they want to send a ''document'' explaining the charge of $85.00 that they want paid. IF they made a clerical error instructing the first collections agency will I still have to pay even though the account was paid in the eyes of the collections agency?

Thanks for reading my question.
